Meera Syal, has written and starred in a wide range of television, radio and theatre productions. Her most recent success, The Kumars, saw her nominated for a BAFTA.

Following a Grammar School education, Meera Syal studied English and Drama at Manchester University. Whilst still at University she wrote and performed in One of Us for which she won the National Student Drama Award.

Meera Syal went on to become an actress, joining the Royal Court Theatre in London. During this time the BBC commissioned her to write a short series on marriage from different views, My Sister Wife was screened as a three-part series.

In 1994 Meera Syal wrote the screenplay Bhaji on the Beach, which was the first British feature film written and directed by an Asian woman. The film received an Evening Standard nomination for Best Screenplay.

Meera Syal co-wrote and starred in the first Asian comedy sketch show to be broadcast on the BBC, Goodness Gracious Me, first heard on Radio 4. Following its success the programme was developed for television and its popularity grew winning Best Comedy Series at the British Comedy Awards. In 1997 Meera Syal was awarded an MBE.

Meera Syal returned to the stage to play the part of Kitty in Bombay Dreams at the Victoria Apollo and more recently has been seen starring in the BBC screenplay based on her book: Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee.
